In the quiet village of Abunga, Uganda, eight-year-old Akao Tamali, a Primary Three pupil at Abunga Primary School, once believed her dream of learning to read and write was impossible. Life in the village was tough and unforgiving. Her days were ruled not by the school bell, but by the endless demands of home.
“The rhythm of my life was not school,” she recalls softly. “Before, I truly believed I would never learn to read or write. Living in the village, my days were packed with chores, fetching water, tending to the livestock, and helping my parents in the garden, especially during the rainy season. We had to work, and I missed so much school because of it. It made me feel sad and like I was falling behind forever.”
Behind her words lies a story shared by many rural children, a cycle where poverty and household responsibilities rob them of education, one missed class at a time. Though Akao was enrolled in school, she struggled with basic literacy, carrying a quiet sense of failure that dimmed her confidence and hope.
Everything changed when Community Focus International introduced the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) program in her school, a community-based intervention designed to help children like Akao catch up in their learning. Instead of punishing her for falling behind, the program met her at her actual learning level, breaking down reading and writing into simple, achievable steps.
“The TaRL program changed everything for me,” she says with a bright smile. “For the first time, I understood what I was reading. My teacher and mentor helped me learn letters, sounds, and words one step at a time. I began to see that I could do it!”
With this new approach, Akao’s progress was remarkable. From barely recognizing letters, she began forming sentences, reading short stories, and expressing her thoughts on paper. Her joy was palpable, a light of comprehension replacing the despair of being left behind.
“Now, I can build sentences, and I am learning to write down my own thoughts,” she says proudly. “Every word I read makes me feel proud and full of hope.”
Akao’s journey is a powerful reminder of what targeted educational support can do. Through CFI’s efforts, hundreds of children across communities like Abunga are rediscovering their potential, catching up in their educational lives, regaining confidence, and reclaiming dreams once thought lost.
Today, Akao is no longer defined by the chores that once kept her out of school. She is defined by her determination, potential, and voice, a living testament that with the right support, every child can learn and thrive.
